The Highlander, a self-described punk rock and metal dive bar with a gastro-punk kitchen, will close tonight. The Highlander has been an Atlanta favorite since it opened in 1992, featuring classic pub grub with an outdoor patio, pool tables and pinball machines.
The restaurant cited “unforeseen circumstances and hardships” for the decision to close. The Highlander could not immediately be reached for comment.
Located in Midtown, the Highlander has been a fixture of the city’s late-night party scene, bringing people in with live music and a full bar. Many moviegoers at the nearby Landmark Midtown Art Cinema theater have savored classic pub fare and a beer as late as 1 a.m.

The 21-plus bar was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” for its jerk chili recipe. Diners often started meals with their potato skins, pot stickers, stuffed mushrooms and pasta-rella sticks before moving on to their signature hamburger, pastrami Reuben and pressed Cuban sandwich. Specials included blackened chicken etouffee and chicken schnitzel piccata, while entrees ranged from mussels to chicken pot pie. The Highlander also had dozens of beers, including IPAs, brown ales and sours.
The Highlander hosted trivia nights on the patio, bingo with a drunk twist, themed art shows featuring local Atlanta artists, punk rock and heavy metal karaoke, and alternative dance nights.
“We love and appreciate all of you who have supported us,” the restaurant wrote in an Instagram post. “Thank you for making the last thirty years amazing.”
