Longtime Alpharetta diner and bagel shop BB’s Bagels is temporarily closed after it was damaged in a fire last night.

Forsyth County Fire Units were dispatched to 770 McFarland Parkway Sunday at about 7 p.m., division chief Jason Shivers said in a statement. “Heavy fire” was blowing through the roof of the building, and part of the roof structure collapsed during the fire.

“Sadly, the building (sustained) heavy and extensive fire, smoke and water damage and will almost assuredly be a total loss,” Shivers said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, he said, but they believe it was worsened by the natural gas line until firefighters were able to secure it. The fire is currently under investigation.

“We are heartbroken for our staff — many of whom have been with us for years. Overnight, they lost their workplace and their source of income. These are people who have worked hard every day to make BB’s feel like home, and we are determined to take care of them as we rebuild,” owners Anna and Eddie Siino said in a Facebook post.

BB’s Bagels has launched a GoFundMe to raise money “to support our employees and their families during this tough time, as well as to help us bring BB’s back,” according to the statement.

The Siinos opened their bagel shop in 2007 in a building that resembles a vintage railroad car diner. The couple had been baking since 1982 and managing restaurants since 1996 in New York and New Jersey before moving south.

BB’s Bagels offers an all-day breakfast menu that features a variety of hand-rolled, kettle-boiled bagels and cream cheese spreads. The extensive menu also includes burgers, breakfast burritos, pancakes, French toast and egg platters.

“(Eddie Siino’s) really big, fat bagels are bready and chewy, with a wonderful pretzel-like crust that gets more crispy after a turn in the toaster,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution contributor Bob Townsend wrote in a 2010 article.

After about 18 years of service, the Siino’s have inspired a loyal fan base of bagel lovers in Alpharetta.

“For nearly two decades, BB’s has been more than just a bagel shop. It’s been a part of this community — a place where neighbors become friends, where families start their mornings, and where regulars are greeted by name,” the statement said. “With your support, BB’s will be back.”

A representative from BB’s Bagels did not immediately respond to the AJC’s request for more information.
