Two people were killed Thursday in a plane crash in Pike County, fire officials confirmed.

Pike County fire spokeswoman Anita Neath said a Curtis Jenny airplane, used as a trainer plane and for long distance mail delivery in WWI, crashed at the Peach State Airport along the 340 block of Jonathans Roost Road in Williamson.

According to witnesses the plane was taking off from the Candler Field Museum about 5:40 p.m. and crashed shortly after taking flight, Neath said. The flames were visible before the plane hit the ground.

The victims’ names were not released.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

No other details were released.
