A Clarke County sheriff’s deputy shot at a suspect near Athens on Tuesday afternoon, leading local authorities to request an investigation by the GBI.
Athens-Clarke police officers and sheriff’s deputies both responded to an armed robbery call just before 2:30 p.m. in the 400 block of North Avenue. The area is a busy commercial corridor about 1 ½ miles north of the University of Georgia campus.
The suspects' car was identified and quickly located on Commerce Road, police said. Officers and deputies were able to stop the car on Newton Bridge Road, but the pursuit continued on foot after two suspects ran away from the vehicle, according to police.
During the foot chase, a deputy fired their weapon at one of the suspects, police said.
“Both suspects were taken into custody, and medical aid was rendered,” a police spokesperson said.
Officials did not elaborate on what medical aid was needed or if either of the suspects were injured.
Two guns were found at the scene, police said.
Local officials have asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation into the incident. The GBI has not shared any updates about the investigation.
