Eighteen-year-old Clive Campbell, also known as DJ Kool Herc, and his sister Cindy Campbell threw a block party at an apartment building in Bronx, New York. When DJ Kool Herc used two turntables and a mixer to switch back and forth between the breakbeats of popular funk and dance records, he became the first to implement a technique he dubbed the Merry-Go-Round. He also used the sound system to give announcements and shoutouts to friends. The event not only introduced the sonic style of rap, but it also became a launching pad for other elements of the culture, including graffiti and breakdancing. The infamous celebration is heralded as the birth of hip-hop.
