The Hawks on Monday named four construction companies to remake Philips Arena.
The firms are Turner Construction, AECOM Hunt, SG Contracting and Bryson Constructors, with Turner — one of the nation’s leading builders of sports facilities — as the controlling partner of the joint venture.
In addition, the Hawks named Atlanta-based HJ Russell & Company, in association with Legends Project Development, as the project management team.
The Hawks and the City of Atlanta announced Nov. 1 that they had come to terms on a deal for a $192.5 million renovation of the 17-year-old Philips Arena. The agreement calls for taxpayers to pay $142.5 million, or almost 75 percent, of the renovation cost.
New York-based Turner Construction has worked on major sports renovations, including New York’s Madison Square Garden and Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. The firm’s Atlanta office has completed renovations of sports facilities at Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia.
According to the Hawks, Los Angeles-based AECOM Hunt has led construction of 15 NBA arenas, Atlanta-based SG Contracting’s work includes Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion and East Point-based Bryson Constructors’ portfolio includes work at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
The four construction companies will team as Atlanta Joint Venture on the Philips Arena project.
The renovations are expected to begin next summer and to be completed by the start of the NBA’s 2018-19 season. The Hawks will play the 2017-18 season in Philips, with most of the construction expected to occur during the offseasons.
