The possibility of rain in North Georgia will stick around all day Wednesday.
That’s no reason to hunker down inside or change your plans, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. In fact, the impact from the rain should be pretty low.
“This rain is not going to be that big a deal,” Monahan said. “This is going to be light showers, light sprinkles. Not everybody is going to see it, but I do want you to know about the rain so you can get ready for your Wednesday.”
Most are just cloudy to start the day. There is a 20% chance of an isolated shower for the morning drive, and that chance increases to 30% for the afternoon, according to Channel 2.
Monahan said some areas of light rain to the west of Georgia will move across the state on and off throughout the day.
“Low pressure is going to stay way down to our south across the Gulf of Mexico, so that will keep most of the rain down there for us,” he said.
The increased rain chances are accompanied by cooler weather. Tuesday topped out near 60 degrees, but Wednesday’s highs will only reach the low 50s, according to Channel 2.
The average high for this time of year is 54 degrees, and Atlanta should fall just shy at 53.
Most of the region is above freezing to start the day, but numbers in the low 30s in the mountains could mean wintry precipitation as the showers move through, Monahan said.
“It may be enough for a little patchy, freezing drizzle,” he said. “I don’t think it’s going to cause any big problems, but it is something I'll be keeping a close eye on between now and sunrise.”
Once the rain and clouds clear out Wednesday, North Georgia will again turn clear and chilly overnight, he said. After another morning in the 30s and low 40s, temperatures are forecast to return to the upper 50s Thursday afternoon.
“We will have much more sunshine on Thursday,” Monahan said. “The rain is coming right back, though. Friday and Saturday we've got showers.”
Friday’s rain chance is 40%, and Saturday has a 30% chance of some early morning showers, according to Channel 2. Things are looking drier and warmer Sunday, which has a projected high of 60 degrees.
“That’s the start of a big warming trend, too, that will take us into the first few days of February,” Monahan said.

An injury crash on a busy surface street has the potential for big impacts to the Wednesday morning commute out of the northern suburbs, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
The head-on crash is blocking Ashford Dunwoody Road north of Oglethorpe Drive while Brookhaven authorities are on scene. The road is also closed at Peachtree Road, the Traffic Center reported.
There were no life-threatening injuries reported, police told the Traffic Center. Johnson Ferry Road is a good alternate.
Elsewhere, the morning commute is off to a smooth start. In most areas, there is “no reason to rush out of the house,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.
“The interstates are in decent shape,” he said.
