WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Congestion intensifies during evening commute as wrecks increase

Traffic is thick on the Perimeter and the Northside as the evening commute continues, according to the  WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

I-285 in DeKalb County wasn’t given much time to recover after a woman allegedly rammed a patrol car near Memorial Drive, blocking all southbound lanes earlier this afternoon. When the crash was cleared about 4 p.m., the drive from Chamblee Dunwoody Road to Memorial Drive was an hour and 15 minutes, the Traffic Center reported.

Also in DeKalb, a right lane remains blocked after a crash on I-85 South at Shallowford Road, the Traffic Center reported. Shortly after the crash, three lanes were blocked, so delays grew quickly.

Cobb County is being affected by a crash on I-75 North at North Marietta Parkway, which has multiple center lanes blocked, the Traffic Center reported.

Hurricane Dorian pushed away from the Bahamas on Tuesday after sitting nearly stationary and pounding the islands for 48 hours.

The storm, now a Category 2, is weakening as it inches its way toward the Florida coast at about 5 mph, but it is growing in size, according to the National Hurricane Center. Tropical storm conditions are expected to approach Georgia’s sea islands Wednesday night, with winds estimated at 110 mph.

Mandatory evacuations are in place for Georgia counties to the east of I-95. Contraflow is in effect on I-16 leaving Savannah, and all lanes are now flowing westbound.

In North Georgia, things could not be quieter, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

“You get on the other side of these storms, and you get some of the nicest weather you could possibly have,” he said. “That’s what we're being spoiled with here in North Georgia.”

Tuesday has been dry and warm with temperatures in the low 90s. There is no chance of rain in the forecast all week, according to Channel 2.

“At least that is one good piece of news for folks who have evacuated either the Georgia coast or the Carolina coast, or down through Florida,” Monahan said. “They have a place with some nice weather to go.”

Locally, Monahan said you may notice the breeze start to pick up. Areas from Atlanta to the south and east will get some gusts of 20 mph, he said. The northwest corner of the state should see next to no impacts from Hurricane Dorian.

The storm is “not far away, but far enough away to spare us in North Georgia,” Monahan said.
