In the face of an approaching winter storm system Wednesday that promised a variety of rain, ice and snow across the metro Atlanta area, many school districts closed. But not Gwinnett County: School officials announced shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday that schools would operate on a regular schedule.
As of 10:45 a.m., both "Gwinnett" and "CLOSEGWINNETT" were trending on Twitter in Atlanta.
At about 7 a.m., Kyle Galloway tweeted, "Gwinnett County is unreal..." accompanying two photos of a traffic accident. That message was retweeted more than 200 times.
Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Deon Washington said Wednesday that weather has been a contributing factor in accidents across the county. The largest amount of ice and snow accumulation is in the Dacula area, Washington said.
Here are more social media reactions about the district's decision.
The district had already been closed on Wednesday, a decision which extended the school calendar to May 21, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post -- the last built-in "snow day" in the calendar.
"[District CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks] has been steadfast about maintaining the 180-day school calendar," wrote the Post's Keith Farner.
