Snowstorm aftermath: Ice and fire

Gwinnett County firefighters responded to the Knollwood Lakes subdivision Monday on the 1200 block of Hidden Spirit Trail in Lawrenceville.

Fire officials said a woman and small child were home asleep at the time of the fire. The woman woke to the cracking sound, smelled smoke and saw flames in her bedroom. She grabbed her daughter and escaped without injury.

Flames did significant damage to the structure, according to Capt. Thomas Rutledge of Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

In metro Atlanta, rush hour was light but not trouble-free.

About 50,000 homes or businesses were still without power Monday at midday, the bulk of them in and around the Athens area, which saw five to six inches of snow.

UGA students built snowmen -- and women -- after Sunday's snowfall.

Jimmy Zhong, 19, a UGA freshman studying computer science, waited outside Creswell Hall on campus Monday for his friend to jump-start his '81 Mercedes Benz. "Cold and diesel don't mix, " quipped Zhong, clad in shorts, a T-shirt and sandals.

Snow and ice covered a parking lots at UGA on Monday.

UGA officials said Monday that road conditions have improved considerably on campus since Sunday's snowfall. Officials estimated more than 5 inches of the white stuff blanketed the area.
