Is Atlanta truly America’s Black mecca?
We know that we can’t have this conversation about ATL’s status without you.
Through January 2026, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Black culture franchise — UATL — will lead the charge in connecting with residents. Our new monthly series “Atlanta: America’s Black Mecca?” will explore what’s real and what’s not behind the claim. Our reporting will include the voices of locals and transplants and discuss how changes — from ITP to OTP — affect all of us.
In the meantime, don’t hesitate to flood our inbox. Join our discussion forum below or hit us up on social — @itsuatl — or via email at uatl@ajc.com.
What brought you here? How do you define success in the Black mecca? Where have we earned that title? Where can we improve? And what would you like us to explore?
Let’s talk!
For the next 10 months, we’ll explore this question in a new editorial series. We’ll be talking to Black locals, transplants, movers and shakers who call Atlanta and its metro area home.
We also want to hear from you. Send us your success stories, challenges, questions, and random queries about Black life in Atlanta.
