For 11 months of the year, Charleston is known as "America's Friendliest City." But during October, the historic town on the South Carolina coast turns spooky, making it a must-see Halloween hot spot. Here are three packages offered by a few of Charleston's finest and most elegant inns:

The "Wicked Good Fun" package at the Francis Marion Hotel gives guests a choice of walking tours from Bulldog Tours. Pick a poison from tours such as Ghost & Dungeon, Dark Side of Charleston, Ghost & Graveyard or the Haunted Jail Tour. After a night of hearing scary tales, guests retreat to the Francis Marion with a copy of the property's own ghost story and signature spooky cookies. This package starts at $189 per night on stays through Nov. 1.

Do you prefer face-to-face thrills? Charleston's most haunted inn, the Battery Carriage House Inn, invites guests to spend two nights mingling with spirits on its "Ghost Adventures" package. Included are accommodations in a carriage house room, tickets to retrace the steps of well-known Charleston spirits on a night-time Ghosts of Charleston walking tour, a bottle of champagne (to calm one's nerves), a private carriage tour of the city (in the safety of sunlight), tickets to tour the historic Aiken-Rhett House and a copy of "The Ghosts of Charleston" book. The package, valid on stays through Nov. 1, start from $550.

Combine haunting and libation spirits at the Andrew Pinckney Inn. The two-night "Charleston Spirits" package includes a walking tour through the historic streets, where entertaining stories of pre- and post-Prohibition will be shared. It continues with a visit to four historic pubs for plentiful spirits. Also included is a welcome amenity, deluxe continental breakfast (served on the rooftop terrace overlooking the Charleston Market) and fresh baked cookies and gourmet tea each afternoon. Rates start from $349 per night.
