The Corn Palace is a tourist attraction in Mitchell, S.D., that features huge murals created with different colored ears of corn on its walls.

The Corn Palace, a South Dakota tourist attraction in Mitchell, is in the midst of changing the murals that decorate its walls. The murals are made from 12 different colors of corn. This year's murals recognize everyday heroes.

Farmer Wade Strand grows all of the corn used to create the murals.

Denny Geidel sorts through various colors of corn grown for the Corn Palace. The corn cobs are trimmed and cut in half before being nailed to the side of building to create murals.

To create the murals, decorators attach 12 different colors of corn to plywood covered with tar paper using a "corn by numbers" method.

The Corn Palace is so large that workers have to use scissor lifts to work on the murals. Once completed, the murals will remain for a year, until a new set is created.
