Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is moving forward on a project to prepare for the extension of the Plane train people-mover tunnel, part of a $6 billion expansion and renovation of the airport.
The airport is seeking Atlanta City Council approval for a $10 million contract with a joint venture of Clark Construction Group, Atkinson Construction and Technique Concrete Construction for design and pre-construction work for the Plane Train tunnel extension.
The extension of the train tunnel is aimed at adding capacity for the train as the airport handles more passengers and prepares to add Concourse G. It could also eventually add Concourses H and I.
The tunnel will be extended about 600 feet underneath the airport MARTA station and SkyTrain airport station, allowing more room for trains to turn back to go in the other direction while another train arrives. That is expected to reduce wait times for the train and increase capacity.
The $10 million contract will not cover enabling work and the actual tunnel excavation, which will require more funding in the future.
The airport is also seeking city council approval for a $9.5 million project to move Georgia Power infrastructure to make way for an expansion of Concourse T. Hartsfield-Jackson already struck a $54 million contract for the construction of five gates to be added to Concourse T.
The Atlanta City Council transportation committee voted in favor of the Plane train tunnel extension and Concourse T Georgia Power measures, which will go to the full council for approval.
