Q: I have a band organ made by Rag Time Music. All oak wood playing on air. The spool frame needs repair, and I need someone who can fix this. Can you help find someone? Thank you. — David Downey, email

A: David, it took a while, but I found someone for you to call regarding getting your band organ repaired. Marvin Harris has been repairing pianos, player pianos and organs, including band organs, for over 55 years. There is a small catch, however. Harris lives in Troy, Alabama. He would prefer to work on your band organ at his place, where he has tools and resources that are easily available. Let him know if you can’t get transport, and he might be able to work something out. You can reach him by calling 334-777-4485 or emailing mdharris@netzero.net.

Q: Many years ago, when I was probably 9 (I’m now 80), I inherited my great-grandfather’s violin. It’s a Giovanni Paolo Maggini. I think some were made in Germany in the 1800s. I’ve never had it appraised, but my associate researched and found that if it’s the real thing, it’s worth quite a bit. I thought you might have a way of finding a place where I could get it appraised. I would appreciate it. — Alan Bush, Cumming

A: Alan, I have two local appraisers for you to explore regarding your violin. Ronald Sachs Violins, 9700 Medlock Bridge Road, Johns Creek, 470-545-0659, offers string instrument appraisals. You can also try Johns Violin Company, 2001 Commerce Drive, Peachtree City, 770-703-4914. Owner Chris Johns is a cellist with 20 years of experience in the music industry, and he was the former co-owner of Ronald Sachs Violins.
