The results are in: Georgians are raising a glass of eggnog this holiday season. According to new research from Drinksworld, which analyzed Google search trends and cocktail-related keywords across the country, our state joins 11 others in favoring this creamy holiday classic.
This marks an interesting shift from past trends. In 2020, a different study found holiday punch leading Georgia’s festive drink preferences.
“Our research shows that regional favorites span an impressive variety of both hot and cold beverages,” a Drinksworld spokesperson said, noting how drink choices often reflect local climate and traditions, MarthaStewart.com reported.
While we’re reaching for eggnog in Georgia, our neighbors in Tennessee prefer hot buttered rum, and Florida celebrates with coquito, a coconut-based holiday treat. For those hosting holiday gatherings, data shows Christmas punch remains a popular choice nationwide, ranking first in eight states from Colorado to Ohio.
For those looking to embrace Georgia’s favorite holiday drink, former AJC writer Bob Howard shared a treasured family recipe he calls “Dad’s Eggnog.” This rich, creamy version features a balance of bourbon and brandy, topped with just a hint of nutmeg. “I never much cared for the eggnog that appears in cartons,” Howard noted, stating this homemade version converted him.
Ingredients
8 large eggs, separated
¾ cup of sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 ½ cups heavy cream
2 cups milk
1 tablespoon vanilla
¾ cup bourbon
¼ cup brandy (I may be a little more generous with the alcohol than this)
1 teaspoon nutmeg
Beat yolks with sugar and add salt. Whip egg whites until fluffy. Heat heavy cream and milk over low heat then fold in the yolk mixture. Add the vanilla. Pour the yolk mixture into a large serving bowl and fold in the egg whites. Add the alcohol and stir. Sprinkle the eggnog with the nutmeg. His insider tip? Serve it in glass punch cups alongside cheese straws; the savory bite perfectly complements the drink’s sweetness.
