Many people use music to relax, whether that means chilling to some laid-back tunes or cranking up your favorite metal band. Sound baths take the idea in a different direction by immersing you in tones and vibrations with the goal of helping you relax and gain focus.
If this sounds like something you’d like to try, sign up for the Dunwoody Nature Center’s sound bathing session scheduled for 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. The center hosts periodic sessions in its North Woods Pavilion, where you’ll be surrounded by a beautiful natural setting.
The event will be led by a certified yoga instructor and sound healer, and starts with grounding and centering breath work and guided meditation before the sound bath. Sound waves will wash over you as your instructor uses instruments such as crystal singing bowls, gongs and chimes in a soothing candlelit atmosphere.
Benefits of sound baths are said to include deep relaxation and stress relief, enhanced mental clarity and focus and support for emotional well-being and mindfulness.
Session instructor Karmin Ruocco explained what she hopes to help attendees achieve in this statement on the center’s website: “Using a holistic application of the fundamentals of breath work, meditation, yoga and sound therapy, my goal is to help others achieve a sense of deep relaxation and inner peace. When we are connected to ourselves in the present moment through the mind, body and breath, we can channel that energy to create meaningful change in our own life and develop a stronger sense of interconnectedness with those around us.”
Register online if you’d like to attend the center’s sound bathing session, which costs $34. You’re encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or blanket.
