All year long, fortune favors grandparents in the Atlanta area looking for fun to share with their grandkids. The chilly December days are almost magical between splashy holiday events and quiet scenes in nature to enjoy together.
Winter wonderlands are at the ready whether snowfall is in the forecast or not. Enjoy these options this week:

The University of Georgia isn’t just about college sports. Zip over to the campus in Athens to traipse a winter light show and tarry in the Winter Wondercave. You’ll need to reserve a start time, and be aware that slots in the early evening on Friday and Saturday fill up first. Buy tickets here.

Part of festive holiday shopping and sights during Norcross’ HoliDAYS festival running through Dec. 20, the complimentary carriage rides are elegant and festive. Indulge yourself as much as the grandkids with the sparkling streetside views.
Guided Waterfall Hike at Amicalola Falls State Park
9:30-11 a.m., daily, $12 per person plus $5 parking. Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge: 280 Amicalola Falls State Park Road, Dawsonville.
Winter may seem like an odd time to begin or continue the hiking habit with your grandchildren, but a guided hike along this trail is extra special in December with rushing falls, winter wildlife tracks, and beautiful bare branches. The event is conducted by a park naturalist who talks about human and natural history along the 1.5-mile trail. It’s not a great option for strollers, but young, active kids and their grandparents will delight in the vigorous walk and the magnificent Amicola Falls. Register in advance here.
