One great way for grandparents and grandkids in the Atlanta area to take a break from the day-to-day is by heading outdoors and into nature for a bit.
The benefits of forest bathing and fresh air are well documented. And you may be the only family member with the time and energy to drag the kids outside and away from their devices — while taking a break from the news and social media yourself.
Here are several ways to enjoy nature with the young ones this week:
Guided morning hike at Fernbank
9-11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17. $20 for nonmembers, members $10, general admission not included. Fernbank, 767 Clifton Rd., Atlanta.
Learn about birdwatching, native plants, and how to identify trees while enjoying a guided hike through this old-growth forest. This is an outing for kids who are used to walking on uneven trails and inclines and is not ADA accessible or suitable for strollers. While it’s not a good choice for beginners, it is splendid for grandparents who want to share a hike with active tweens and teens. This once-a-month opportunity is also a good chance to check out the forested section of Fernbank without paying admission for the splashier 3D events and such. Buy tickets here.
Fall Bingo Hike at Red Top Mountain State Park
10-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15. $5 admission plus $5 parking. Red Top Mountain State Park, 50 Lodge Road SE, Acworth.
This Friday morning hike amid brilliantly colored fall foliage is even more fun for little ones with a nature-themed bingo game. The event is designed as easy-going fun for little explorers and their grandparents. And hey, the winner gets a prize!
Ranger-led s’mores by the fire
6:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15. $5 parking. Fort Mountain State Park, 181 Fort Mountain Park Road, Chatsworth.
Who wants to head out into the forest at night with their grandparents? Young kids may not appreciate Grandad’s joke or typical nighttime noises from owls and frogs, but almost all kids love s’mores and bonfires — you might too. The ranger in charge of the Fort Mountain State Park event will demonstrate building a fire and crafting s’mores. Ingredients are included. Meet on the beach area of the park, and talk about outdoor fire safety on the way to Chatsworth.
