Just for the fun of it: Things to do with grandkids this week

If you’re a conscientious grandparent who lives in the Atlanta area, educational or fitness activities may be at the top of your list of outings for the grandkids.

But sometimes it’s even better to just let go and have fun together. If you didn’t have the budget or the time for frivolity when your adult children were growing up, consider inviting them along. And if your childhood lacked easy-going fun, now’s the time to entertain you or your spouse’s inner child.

Go ahead and have fun with one or more of these options this week:

Family-friendly improv outdoors

7-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, free admission and free two-hour parking. Atlantic Green at Atlantic Station, 1380 Atlantic Dr. NW, Atlanta.

Share some laughs courtesy of Whole World Improv on a weekday evening. It’s rare that improv shows promise to be family-friendly, but this one features all-ages laughter. Bring a chair or some beach blankets to enhance your enjoyment, and plan to order takeout from the surrounding restaurants.

Touch-a-Truck event

6-8 p.m., Friday Sept. 6, free admission. The Avenue West Cobb, 3625 Dallas Hwy., Marietta.

Toddlers and big kids alike will get a thrill from the trucks at this Marietta gathering, including fire trucks and army vehicles. Food trucks are on hand, too, and the young ones will enjoy the bounce house and balloon artists.

‘Fraggles Forever’ at the Worlds of Puppetry Museum

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, 12-5 p.m. Sunday, museum admission $16.50 adults, $14.50 55+, $12.50 ages 2-12. Center for Puppetry Arts, 1404 Spring St. NW, Atlanta.

Shake it off and boogie down with puppets from the Fraggle Rock univers. Remember the Fraggles from the ‘80s? Sprocket, Mokey and the gang are all here for this fun interactive exhibit included with admission to the museum. Buy museum tickets here.

Atlanta Falcons Dirty Birds Rally

7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, free admission. Atlantic Green at Atlantic Station near Hobnob, 245 18th St. NW, Atlanta.

Cut loose on Friday night and build anticipation for a fun Falcons football season. This free kickoff party features appearances from the Falcons cheerleaders and players including Grady Jarrett, Bijan Robinson and Younghoe Koo. Even non-fans will enjoy the live music and giveaways. Hard-core followers will relish a trip to the team store across the green to spot new swag.
