Grandparents can do the whole extended family a favor by planning outings in and around Atlanta that are fun but not food-centric on Thanksgiving week and weekend.
Even if you and your grandchildren are not among the majority who may consume outrageous amounts on Thanksgiving, you may feel sapped from hanging around the house for hours or days on end.
So get out and about! These events and activities will recharge your batteries, whether you are spending the holiday with the usual bunch you live with or have a full house with grandkids of all ages.
Civil War photography talk at Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park
3-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, $10 park entrance ages 16+, under 16 free. Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, 3370 Lafayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe.
Pile up the family van or tuck a few of you into a compact car to drive over the river and through the woods to this Civil War site and historic park. No reservations are required, but if you can make it in time for the ranger-led photography talk, great. It’s inside the visitor’s center on top of Lookout Point and is a thoughtful exploration of the Civil War photography of Robert “Royan” M. Linn, who had a studio at that vantage during the battles.
If you can’t predict whether you’ll arrive by 3 p.m., you can still enjoy the center and its photography collection. Anytime between sunrise and sunset works for traipsing the park. Along with the rare photos, it commemorates 12,000 years of Indigenous people who first lived on these lands.
