The Porches & Pies Festival in Adair Park will return for its ninth year on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023. The festival boasts around 40 pie flavors to sample.

Sweltering weather in the Atlanta area can keep you and your favorite grandkids housebound just as surely as a blizzard. But now that the temperatures are dropping — well, a little — be sure to plan some active pursuits that will take you out and about together.

Here are good options for getting back in the swing of things:

Collect Con Atlanta

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22. $30 Saturday, $25 Sunday, under 8 free. Georgia World Congress Convention Center Hall C3, 285 Andrew Young International Blvd NW, Atlanta

Get a blast from the past and a dose of current anime culture at this show featuring collectible cards from Pokémon and Funko POP! to old-school baseball cards. Special guests include Charles Martinet, the voice of the Mario Brothers, and various anime voiceover stars. You can learn from the grandkids about their faves, and they can enjoy your memories of collecting as a kid. Saturday’s admission includes a concert and 900 vendors are on hand all weekend. Porches and Pies at Adair Park

10th Annual Cool Dads Rock Soapbox Derby Festival

11 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21. Free admission. Historic Fourth Ward Park, 680 Dallas Street NE, Atlanta.

Watch the homemade derby cars zoom about and enjoy food trucks and family games at this annual event sponsored by and benefitting the Cool Dads Rock community group. Who knows? You may have so much fun you’ll be inspired to build your own box car and enter next year.
