Growing number of Georgia farmers now growing pumpkins

The calendar said summer ended September 22, and grandparents in the Atlanta area may have already put out fall decorations. But crisp, chilly temperatures complete the picture, and now that they’ve arrived, it’s time to plan some fall fun with your grandkids.

Here are ways to enjoy the sights and scents of fall in metro Atlanta this week:

Pumpkins at Callaway Gardens

5-9 p.m. Thursday, 5-10 p.m. Friday, 4-10 p.m. Saturday, 4-9 p.m. Sunday through Nov. 2. $19.99 children 2 and up, $24.99 adults, $5 extra on Oct. 11 and 13 and all Saturdays. 17617 US-27, Pine Mountain.

These are really great pumpkins, Charlie Brown! Callaway’s 2500-acre theme garden features gargantuan live pumpkins, sunflowers by the field and a fog-filled scary adventure. At night, the lights come out and they outdo any neighborhood display.

Morningside Farmer’s Market

8 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, free admission. Morningside Presbyterian Church, 1411 N. Morningside Dr., Atlanta.

One of Atlanta’s most established farmer’s markets, the gathering at Morningside Presbyterian Church features organic fall produce, bright autumn bouquets grown locally, fresh eggs and regional artisanal foods and crafts.

It’s a nice option if you or your grandchildren are vegetarian-curious, and it’s a direct hit if you’re already favoring local produce. Farmers are on hand to talk about growing food in the Atlanta area, and you may spot top area chefs shopping along with families. Free parking and the fresh scents of baked goods add extra appeal. Buy wholesome snacks at the market, and be sure to carry home local fruits and vegetables for a family meal.
