Here in Houston, the friendliest city in Texas, we’re ready to open our arms and hearts to Atlanta Braves fans this week and welcome you to your first World Series since 1999.
Our counterparts at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution were kind enough to offer a guide to their city for Houstonians traveling to root on the Astros, so we thought we’d return the favor.
Here are our top five picks for Atlanta visitors to check out while in Houston.
Explore the outdoors
Skip the rental car. Public transportation can take you to every corner of Houston and its environs, but real insiders explore the city on foot. Plus, the weather is just lovely and predictable this time of year. We’ll definitely have the roof open at Minute Maid.
Must-try barbecue
The New York Times picked a Houston-area barbecue spot in its best restaurants list this year. But our favorite barbecue pop up - the McRib - happens every fall. This year it starts Nov. 1, so if you want to try it you’ll have to make it to Game 7.
FROM THE AJC: 5 things Astros fans should do while in Atlanta for the World Series
Best shopping in Houston
Be sure to hit up one of our iconic shopping districts before the game. We recommend either the Houston Astros Team Store on Texas Avenue or any strip center housing the Houston classic retailer, Academy Sports + Outdoors, for the very best in World Series attire.
Cool off during down time
Take a swim in the bayou. Any bayou. It’s totally normal and everyone does it here.
Tours and attractions
Spend a morning hiking Mount Houston or have your photo taken at Chimney Rock. Our Beltway tour will show you highlights of the entire metro area in just a few hours. Or, for the budget-conscious, the Loop tour offers two extra hours of sightseeing time for free.
