Since it was introduced as a prototype project a year ago, Google Glass has received lots of attention as one way we might use the Internet in the near future. But what is it?

Google Glass is a set of lightweight, Internet-connected glasses meant to bring functions we associate with smartphones and other portable electronics to something wearable. Physically, they’re lens-free glasses that include a camera, GPS and a small, unobtrusive screen that can display information like, say, a map or information about objects in your view. It recognizes voice commands and can take photos, record video or do a Google search.

While there are doubts about how it might function in the real world, Google seems optimistic about its potential. It expects to release Glass as early as the end of this year at a price of $1,500 or less.
