Memorial Day weekend sports watch

The Evan Gattis Show, aka the Braves, comes to Citi Field to meet the Mets and give New Yorkers a chance to see the rookie catcher's power prowess. On Saturday, after first resuming Friday night's suspended game, they play at 7:15 p.m. on a Fox regional telecast, then at 8:05 p.m. Sunday on the ESPN national telecast. Gattis, who has homered in his past two games in key situations, is sure to be the talk of the telecasts.

High school baseball state championships get under way on Saturday. In Class AAAAAA, it's Roswell at Milton. In Class AAAAA, it's Greenbrier at Pope. In Class AAA, it's Cartersville at North Hall. All three are doubleheaders on Saturday and will conclude on Monday if the teams split the first two games. The Class AAAA gets underway Monday when Redan visits Marist. And the Class AA series begins with a single game Saturday when Lovett plays at Westminster. The AJC will provide coverage of all series on ajc.com and MyAJC.com.

We'll have a better idea if the expected NBA Finals matchup of Miami vs. San Antonio is on a fast track. The defending NBA champion Heat and LeBron James play the Pacers Sunday night in Game 3 in Indianapolis. The Spurs play at the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday and Monday.

The biggest race weekend of the year gets underway at noon Sunday with the Indianapolis 500 on ABC. San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh will drive the Corvette Stingray pace car and Jim Nabors will sing the national anthem. At 6 p.m. on Fox, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series race begins at Charlotte. Denny Hamlin set a track record Thursday night to win the pole, the 14th of his NASCAR career.

Southern California and USC's Annie Park were crowned the NCAA women's golf champions Friday in both team and individual competitions, respectfully, in Athens at the UGA Golf Course. The men's version of the national championship gets underway on Tuesday in Milton with both Georgia and Georgia Tech dreaming of a title. The PGA Tour is in Fort Worth for the Crowne Plaza Invitational and there are several golfers with Georgia ties who are in position to challenge for the weekend.

The Dream season opens at Philips Arena on Saturday night against Tulsa at 7 p.m. on SportSouth and one of the league's new trio of rookies, Skylar Diggins. The WNBA is banking on the rookies, including Brittney Griner and Elena Della Donne, to bring excitement to the league. All three rookies will appear on national TV in a Memorial Day doubleheader.

The annual SEC meetings are next week in Destin, Fla., and the AJC's Tim Tucker will be there to bring you daily reports beginning Tuesday including the latest comments on a variety of issues facing the league by coaches like Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier as well as UGA's Mark Richt.
