Today’s interviewee is Roswell coach Chris Prewett, whose team lost to Milton 35-20 for the Region 7-5A championship on Nov. 1 and to Hughes 31-21 in the Class 5A second round on Nov. 22. Prewett gives his thoughts on next week’s Milton-Hughes Class 5A championship game.
1. What does a team need to do to beat Hughes? “Langston Hughes and Coach [Daniel] Williams’ team plays very physical and is tough to play against in many ways. They do not make a ton of mistakes on either side of the ball and are good at every position on the field. I was impressed at how poised Hughes played and made some big-time plays in crucial moments of the game. To beat Hughes, you have to win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and limit some of their big plays on offense. The running backs are really good, and they do a good job of getting you blocked offensively. No. 1 Jones, on offense, is criminally underrated in the state, and I’ve seen the quarterback play get better and better as the playoffs have continued.” [The quarterback is Christian Langford. No. 1 is Jabari Jones, who has 1,001 all-purpose yards with 10 touchdowns receiving and five rushing.]
2. What does a team need to do to beat Milton? “Milton does a great job all around the field. Coach [Ben] Reaves and his staff have his guys prepared with a good game plan, and the players execute it at a high level. Their defense is very tough to score against, and the offense is tough to stop consistently. I have been impressed watching Milton at how consistent they have been throughout the year. If you talk about how to beat them, you have to find a way to keep those wide receivers in front of you on defense. The quarterback [Miami signee Luke Nickel] is very good, and you aren’t going to confuse him too often. If you can move him around and get some pressure in his face, you still have to cover Power 5 skill players all over the field. The running back, [T.J.] Lester, has been underrated for years and is one of the toughest guys we had to tackle all season.”
3. What’s the key matchup in the game? “I think the skill players are comparable from both teams, where they have extremely good talent and tough kids at the skill positions. I would think the team that can run the ball more consistently and control the possession game would have a good chance to win the game. The line of scrimmage in this game to me is the biggest key. It will be extremely violent and should be fun to watch. Both sides of the ball on both teams are very physical and get after it.”
4. How do you see the game playing out? “First of all, both coaches do a tremendous job with these teams. I think both coaches do a really good job of getting their teams ready to play, and I think it will be interesting to see who takes advantage of the mistakes in the game. In a close game like this one, special teams and one big play outside of offense and defense could be the key to the game.”
