A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame is joining Chamblee’s football staff.
Ed Reed, an eight-time All-Pro safety inducted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2019, will be Chamblee’s offensive coordinator, coach Bob Swank announced Monday.
“He’s at a point now where he had time in his life, and we had a need and felt it fit into what he had time-wise,” Swank said. “It’s a great chance for our kids and even our coaches to be around and learn from Ed for however long he’s here. We’re looking forward to it.”
Reed will be the second former NFL star working with Chamblee’s program.
Former Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, an Atlanta native, became the team’s head of college recruiting last year. Lewis and Reed were Ravens teammates for five seasons, including in 2003, when Lewis became the fifth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.
Both have sons on the Chamblee team. Edward Reed, a rising senior, and Jazz Lewis, a rising sophomore, were among the team’s three leading receivers last season. A third former Ravens player, Evan Oglesby, also has a son on the team. Kyle Oglesby, a rising senior, was a backup quarterback last season.
Swank said he didn’t ask for Reed’s resume. He’s known him since Reed’s son was a freshman in the program and knew that Reed was an assistant defensive backs coach for the Bills in 2016 and worked on alma mater Miami’s staff for three seasons.
Reed then accepted the job as Bethune-Cookman’s head coach for the 2023 season, but the school declined to ratify his contract 25 days later after Reed made statements critical of the school on social media.
Reed played 12 NFL seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Ravens in the 2012 season. He won a college national title with Miami in 2001. He’s from Louisiana.
Chamblee was 2-8 last season in Class 5A but is making progress in Swank’s four seasons.
Coming off a six-year run with only seven total victories, the DeKalb County school elected to play a non-region schedule in 2020 and 2021.
Since resuming a region schedule in 2022, Chamblee is 14-18 overall and 8-9 in region play.
