It’s been a 5-0 start like no other for Kell High School's football team, which is unbeaten this late in a season for the first time and ranked No. 4 in the Class AAAA state poll.
Each of Kell’s opponents has been undefeated when Kell played it. All five would be undefeated if Kell hadn’t beaten them; Grayson, Woodstock, Etowah, East Paulding and Hiram are 19-0 otherwise. Kell’s remarkable run will continue Friday night when the Longhorns play at home against another undefeated team, Pope, which is 4-0 for the first time since 2000.
The Kell-Pope game is one of five in metro Atlanta that pits a ranked team against an unbeaten team.
M.L. King (3-1), which has scored at least 40 points in all four of its games, plays No. 8 Valdosta (5-0) in a Class AAAAA game at Hallford Stadium.
Tenth-ranked Newton (4-0), ranked for the first time since 1995, plays at home against East Coweta (4-0) in a Region 2-AAAAA game.
In AAA, No. 7 Eastside (4-1) of Covington plays at No. 2 Sandy Creek (4-0).
Wesleyan (5-0), the No. 2 team in Class A, plays at Pace Academy (4-0).
Another game to watch Friday will be Brookwood (4-1) against South Gwinnett (4-1) in 8-AAAAA for bragging rights in Snellville. Brookwood leads the all-time series 22-4, but South Gwinnett won 17-14 last year and is ranked No. 9 in Class AAAAA.
