M.L. King is without a football coach for the fourth time in five seasons.
That’s unusual for a program that wins. King averaged 9.8 victories over the past 10 seasons, but Cortez Allen resigned after one season and a 7-4 finish, saying it “just wasn’t the right fit.”
Allen, a Southwest DeKalb alumnus, was head coach for three seasons at Newton before arriving at M.L. King a year ago. He was on staff at newly opened M.L. King from 2002-04. M.L. King was 3-7, 11-2 and 11-3 in those seasons, quickly becoming a state power under coach Kenny Barrow.
“It’s just a different place now,” Allen said. “It’s not the same place when I was there before as defensive coordinator, not what I expected it to be.”
Corey Jarvis, who led the program to three 10-win seasons in five years, resigned after the 2009 season to take a job at Duluth. He’s now head coach at Mays. Michael Carson led M.L. King to 8-4 and 12-1 finishes, but was forced out over off-the-field issues. Interim coach Rober Freeman led M.L. King to an 11-1 finish in 2012, but was not retained.
Grady hires former NFL player: Grady's new football coach is former NFL player and Grady alumnus Earthwind Moreland. Moreland played on a national-championship team with Georgia Southern before spending seven seasons in the NFL, mostly as a reserve cornerback with teams that included the Jets, Browns and Patriots. He also played in the Arena League, the AAFL and NFL Europe. Moreland succeeds Ronnie Millen, who was forced out after a school investigation found that several football players did not legally live in the Grady district. Lee Hannah was named Grady's interim coach in January. He was hired as head coach of Baldwin earlier this month.
Chapel Hill coach takes South Cobb job: South Cobb has hired Geoff Pastrick, who was 11-11 in two seasons at Chapel Hill. Pastrick coached in Texas for six years before coming to Hillgrove as an assistant in 2007. He then joined McEachern's staff, during which the team was 35-10 in Pastrick's four seasons. Pastrick will replace Michael Youngblood, who was 3-7 in one season.
Wilkins is Gatorade player of year: Senior forward Isaiah Wilkins, who led Greater Atlanta Christian to a 32-0 finish, is the Gatorade boys basketball player of the year for Georgia. Wilkins averaged 18.2 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, 2.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's state players of the year will be announced this week.
Cooper scores 39 in all-star game: McEachern junior point guard Te'a Cooper made seven 3-point shots and scored 39 points in the GACA North-South All-Star junior game in Savannah last weekend. Cooper's South team won 95-93 on a 3-pointer by North Cobb's Kyrie Chandler in the final 10 seconds. Teams were picked based on GHSA regions, not strict geography. Other girls most valuable players were Asia Durr of St. Pius (North juniors), Lauren Turner of Mays (North seniors) and Kahlia Lawrence of Kendrick (South seniors). The boys MVPs were Rakim Lubin of Buford (North seniors), TeMarcus Blanton of Luella (South seniors), Malik Beasley of St. Francis (North juniors) and Trevon Scott of McIntosh County Academy (South juniors).
