Greenbrier and Lumpkin County, the host school, won their first state championships in girls duals wrestling Saturday.

Greenbrier upset two-time reigning champion Carrollton 48-27 in the Division I final. Carrollton had beaten Greenbrier 49-27 in last year’s open division final.

Greenbrier dominated the lighter weight classes this year across the three rounds of the tournament, winning 17 of the 18 matches contested by Stella Stancoven (100 pounds), Danyah Ahmed (105), Jansen Drumgoole (110) Journey Drumgoole (115), Esperanza Huitron (120) and Abigail Sekajipo (125).

The championship was Greenbrier’s fourth in two years in girls sports after golf (2023) and flag football (2023, 2024).

Lumpkin County beat Jordan 45-36 in the Division II final. Going 3-0 over Saturday’s three team rounds were Cadence Grulla (100), Emily Wilson (110), Greta Garbuzovas (140 and Mattie Mendoza (155). Garbuzovasa is a reigning individual state champion at 140.

The championship was Lumpkin County’s fifth in all sports. Two previous ones, in 1981 and 2024, came in boys’ wrestling. Lumpkin County’s boys wrestling team was a state runner-up last week.
