Two of the eight defending state champions sit at No. 1 and the other six are among the top 10 in their classifications in the Georgia high school girls basketball rankings after the first weekend of play in 2025.
Hebron Christian, winner of the past two state titles in Class 3A, is No. 1 in the Georgia High School Association’s toughest division, the newly created Class 3A-A private, which will feature four 2024 state champions vying for one title this season.
Hebron Christian is 13-1 and the highest-ranked team from Georgia in the most recent MaxPreps girls basketball national rankings. The Lions’ only blemish was a 55-52 loss to Hughes on Dec. 20. Hebron Christian had defeated Hughes 62-55 just six days earlier.
Among the teams pursuing Hebron Christian in Georgia’s 3A-A private are No. 2 St. Francis (14-1), No. 4 Mount Paran Christian (14-2) and No. 9 Greenforest Christian (6-5), all of which won state titles last season. St. Francis was the Class A Division I champion the past two seasons. Mount Paran won the Class A Private championship in 2022 and the Class 2A title the past two seasons. No. 9 Greenforest Christian was the Class A Division II champion last season.
The other defending state champion sitting at No. 1 in its class is Baldwin, which won Class 4A last season for its first state title since winning three straight from 1986 to 1988. The Braves (9-3) are No. 1 in Class 3A, with losses to ranked opponents Thomson, Jackson-Atlanta and Holy Innocents’.
Grayson (14-1), the Class 7A champion last season, is No. 3 in Class 6A behind North Paulding and North Forsyth. Grayson has won 14 consecutive games since a six-point loss to Cherokee (currently No. 5 in 6A) in the season opener. North Paulding suffered its first loss Saturday, 45-35 to Hughes, but held on to the top spot. Hughes is 11-1 and ranked No. 1 in Class 5A.
Creekside is 14-0 and the No. 1 team in Class 4A, which includes defending state champions Marist and Jackson-Atlanta. No. 2 Marist won the Class 6A title last season, and Jackson won 5A.
Thomson, Elbert County and Taylor County are the other No. 1-ranked teams. Thomson of Class 2A is 13-1, its only loss a 46-44 setback against Hebron Christian on Dec. 13. Thomson is in the same region as No. 2 Josey and No. 3 Butler and will play both teams twice in the final three weeks of the regular season.
Elbert County, which won its first state championship in Class 2A in 2022, is 14-0 and No. 1 in Class A Division I. Class A Division II Taylor County (10-0) is seeking its 12th state championship but first since winning Class A Public in 2015.
