Colquitt County football coach Rush Propst has learned never to question his team’s resiliency or toughness this season.

Even when the Packers began the season 0-3. And when Colquitt County started the playoffs with a 5-5 record, he still thought they could make a postseason run.

Colquitt County’s resilience was tested again Friday, but the Packers responded with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter for a 31-24 victory at Grayson to advance to the Class AAAAA state championship game.

“I’m happy for this community, I’m happy for our fans and I’m happy for our kids,” said Propst, who earned his 200th career victory.

Trailing 24-17, Colquitt County (9-5) tied the score when Tyler Brown threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Hudson, who faked out a few players and sped to the end zone with 11:17 left in the game.

Colquitt County took a 31-24 lead when running back Tevin King ran off left guard for a 1-yard touchdown with 8:08 remaining. The score was set up when the Packers recovered a fumble at the Rams’ 21-yard line.

Grayson (10-4) then gained only 13 yards on eight plays when it took the ball for the last time with 3:21 remaining. The Rams’ last offensive play came when Nick Schuessler was sacked for a 5-yard loss on a fourth-and-13 play at the Grayson 33-yard line.

“I thought we would never quit,” Propst said.

Colquitt County got off to a rough start on the first play of the game when receiver Octavius Little fumbled a pass by Brown, which was recovered by Grayson’s Devin Gillespie at the Packers’ 30-yard line.

Six plays later, Rams running back Robert Nkemdiche powered his way up the middle for 6-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-1 play to make the score 7-0.

But the Packers drove 80 yards on 14 plays to make the score 7-6. Brown and Hudson connected three times for 69 yards. Brown finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Hudson.
