Camden County won its 11th consecutive state title and three other schools extended their championship reigns at the GHSA boys team duals wrestling championships, held Friday and Saturday at six locations around the state.
Cass, Rockmart and Social Circle repeated as champions. Jefferson won its 21st title in the 24-year history of the duals championships, and Creekview won for the first time.
Camden County rolled through the first three rounds of the Class 6A bracket, advancing past East Coweta, Mill Creek and West Forsyth, before defeating Class 6A host Buford 43-26 in the final. The Wildcats got individual victories in the eight of the 14 weight classes – Bradley Patterson (113 pounds), Isaac Santos (120), Cane Smolarsky (126), Hunter Prosen (138), Waylon Rozier (150), Brock Weaver (165), Brian Wright (175) and Ryder Wilder (215) – in securing the title.
Only Jefferson, which won 18 consecutive duals titles from 2002-19 and 18 straight traditional titles (2001-18), has longer wrestling streaks in GHSA history. Camden County will be aiming for its 11th straight traditional championship at the state meet next month.
Rockmart won its fourth consecutive title when it defeated Lovett in the Class 2A final. The teams finished tied with 38 points each, and both won seven individuals matches, but Rockmart was awarded the victory based on the National Federation tiebreaker criterion (fewest forfeits allowed).
Cass of Class 4A and Social Circle of Class A won for the second straight year.
Cass, which won Class 5A in 2024, defeated Woodland of Cartersville 38-30 for its third championship in four seasons. The Colonels got victories from Hayden Trimm (106), Gavin Walker (113), Hunter Barrett (120), Luka Jensen (132), Aidan Piatt (144), David Jewell (150), Kirecg Roe (190) and John Abernathy. Woodland won championships in 2019, 2020 and 2021 before Cass began its current run. Cass defeated 2024 Class 4A champion Central of Carrollton 37-29 in the semifinals.
Social Circle had little trouble in the first three rounds against McIntosh County Academy, Dublin and Trion before defeating Toombs County 51-18 for the title, winning 11 of the 14 individual matches in the final. Social Circle has won seven duals championships.
Jefferson of Class 3A was not a defending champion this time, but the Dragons have long dominated the sport. Their 55-15 victory over Troup in the final gave them their 45th wrestling state title (24 in traditional, 21 in duals). Jefferson’s closest match in the tournament was a 45-30 semifinal victory over Lumpkin County, the defending Class 3A champion.
Creekview of Class 5A was the only first-time champion, although the Grizzlies do have a 2020 traditional state title to their credit. Creekview defeated Gainesville and Coffee in the first two rounds before knocking out 2024 Class 6A champion South Effingham 42-35 in the semifinals. The Grizzlies then beat Glynn Academy 37-33 for the title behind individual wins by Cole Warren (120), Ty Warren (126), Brock Salas (132), Aaron Campbell (150), Weston Wilkie (165), Domenic Velardez (190) and Jackson Locke (215).
All three of the defending champions that did not repeat – South Effingham, Central-Carrollton and Lumpkin County – lost in the semifinals to the eventual champions but fought their way through the consolation bracket to earn third-place finishes.
The girls duals championships will be held Saturday at Lumpkin County High School, and the boys and girls traditional tournaments will be Feb. 13-15 at the Macon Coliseum.
