Brookwood’s boys and girls teams swept the Class 6A competition and Johns Creek’s boys and Lassiter’s girls of Class 5A extended their long championship reigns in the GHSA Swimming and Diving State Championships on Saturday at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.
The Brookwood boys team finished with a 409-293 lead over second-place Walton to earn its first swimming championship since 2019 but its eighth overall. The Broncos’ girls cruised past second-place Harrison 427-269 for its second consecutive state title and ninth in program history. Brookwood’s sweep of the titles was its third in eight seasons.
Baylor Stanton led the Broncos’ boys team with victories in the 200-yard individual medley (1:45.01) and 100 backstroke (47.46) and competed on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:32.10) with Ean Silvers, Collin Severtson and Wyatt Hinson. Brookwood got victories from Michael Stanton in the 500 freestyle (4:31.23) and the 200 freestyle relay team (Thien Nguyen, Michael Stanton, Noah Silvers and Hinton, 1:25.37).
Owen Cooper of North Forsyth also won multiple events, taking first place in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Nicole Amike led the way for the Brookwood girls team, taking home first place in the 50 freestyle (23.18) and 100 freestyle (50.94) and swimming on the winning 200 freestyle relay team (1:35.57) with Sophie Hamilton, Hailey Dopson and Amelia Moore. Dopson also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.13.
Harrison’s Evelyn Jezerinac won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.95) and was part of first-place teams in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Lassiter’s girls dominated in Class 5A, winning eight of the 11 swimming events, to win its sixth consecutive state championship and 11th overall. The Trojans finished with 411 points, well ahead of second-place Pope’s 325.
Finnly Jollands won the 50 freestyle (23.28) and 100 backstroke (54.23) and was part of winning relay teams in the 200 medley (1:43.40) and 400 freestyle (3:27.62). Kate Bradley won the 100 butterfly (54.98) and 500 freestyle (4:55.49) and joined Jollands in the relay victories. Rose Jones won the 100 freestyle (51.35) and competed on the 400 freestyle relay team, and Ashlyn Loftin won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.48) and swam on the 200 medley relay team.
Maria Beretta took third place in the 100 breaststroke and Maggie O’Shaughnessy finished fourth, joining Loftin to give Lassiter three of the top four finishers in the next-to-last event of the night. The Trojans closed out the championship with the victory in the 400 freestyle relay.
Johns Creek’s boys won just two events – the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle – but had at least one finisher in the top five in 10 of the 11 events, giving the Gladiators more than enough points to win their fifth consecutive state title and sixth in seven years.
Tianyu Cui, Jaxon Lou and Paul Wajnberg swam on both winning relay teams. They were joined by Bryce Debowsky in the 200 medley relay and Alexander Lou in the 400 freestyle relay. All five swimmers also finished in the top five in at least one individual event.
Luke Sandberg of Dunwoody won titles in the 200 freestyle (1:38.00) and 100 freestyle (44.33), and Isaiah Tucker of Kennesaw Mountain won in the 100 butterfly (47.52) and 100 backstroke (48.21)
Team champions in the lower classifications were decided on Thursday. Northview’s boys and Marist’s girls won championships in Class 4A, and Greater Atlanta Christian’s boys and Lovett’s girls took home titles in Class A-3A.
