In a game that good, it didn’t matter which team won or lost, certainly not for the sake of rankings. Grayson and Holy Innocents’ both played like the No. 1-ranked teams they were Saturday night in a game that Grayson won 68-66.
The state’s consensus No. 1 junior prospect, Grayson’s Caleb Holt, scored on a putback to break a 66-66 tie with 1:20 left. The state’s consensus No. 1 senior prospect, Holy Innocents’ Caleb Wilson, missed a potential tying shot at the end.
It was a great night otherwise for Wilson. One day after committing to North Carolina, the 6-foot-9 forward had 28 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots against Georgia’s best team.
For Grayson, Holt finished with 20 points and had seven rebounds while teammate Jacob Wilkins, a Georgia signee, scored 15 points.
Grayson (19-2) remains No. 1 in Class 6A while Holy Innocents’ (15-4) still leads the Class 3A-A private division. Grayson’s losses are against out-of-state teams while Holy Innocents’ losses are against Grayson, No. 1 Pace Academy of Class 4A and two out-of-state teams.
There was one game last week between No. 2 teams. Wheeler of Class 6A beat Milton of 5A surprisingly easily, 82-52. Wheeler’s Colben Landrew scored 21 points, and Mansur McClain scored 19.
The rankings remained relatively stable this week. Entering were Westlake in Class 6A, Hughes in 5A, Mays and Jonesboro in 4A, Jefferson in 3A and Dublin in A Division I. Falling out were South Gwinnett, Rome, Ware County, Benedictine, Luella and Brantley County.
