A northwest Georgia high school football player was admitted into the intensive care unit of a Chattanooga hospital Tuesday and is being treated for double pneumonia caused by COVID-19, according to AllOnGeorgia, an online media outlet that covers news in Chattooga County.

Bryson Pollock, a sophomore lineman, began having symptoms the morning after Chattooga’s opening game Aug. 20 with Adairsville, the player’s mother, Kandia Phillips, told AllOnGeorgia reporter Casie Bryant. His symptoms worsened through the week, the mother said.

“Saturday, he woke up with a headache and couldn’t taste or smell,’’ Phillips said. “I took him to a local testing site and found out he had Covid.’’

Pollock is being treated in Chattanooga, about 40 miles north of Summerville, because a closer hospital in Rome had no room, the article said.

Chattooga previously had canceled its game this week with Sonoraville.
