Monroe Area received the Georgia High School Football Daily state Team of the Week award in October after beating Oconee County. Monroe Area is now No. 1 in the Class 3A rankings entering the 2021 playoffs.

Monroe Area is the new No. 1 team in Class 3A entering the high school football playoffs, marking the first time the Purple Hurricanes have held the top ranking in their history.

Previous No. 1 Cedar Grove lost to Sandy Creek 40-35, making room at the top. Cedar Grove had won 34 straight region games, not counting three overturned by forfeit last season, but still got the No. 1 seed in Region 5. Cedar Grove will enter the playoffs ranked No. 5.

Monroe Area actually moved up two spots as the No. 2 team in Class 3A also lost when defending champion Pierce County beat Appling County 21-0.

There wasn’t much change in the rankings on other classes. Woodward Academy scooted up to No. 2 from No. 3 after beating previous No. 2 Creekside 21-14 in Class 5A.

The first of five playoff rounds will be this weekend.
