CLEMSON, S.C. — With five minutes remaining in the first half Tuesday at Littlejohn Coliseum, Georgia Tech point guard Javian McCollum left the Yellow Jackets game against Clemson after a collision.
McCullum and Tech center Baye Ndongo collided going for a loose ball on the Tech defensive end of the floor, a collision that knocked McCullum to the floor. McCullum got to his feet and jogged to Tech’s offensive end, then slowed his jog to a walk in front of the Clemson bench, continued to walk along the sideline and then past the baseline where he eventually and slowly dropped to the floor and lay on his back.
Play, meanwhile, continued and the Jackets actually got a layup from Ibrahim Souare to take a 28-27 lead. On the other end, after Clemson brought the ball up the floor, the Jackets frantically tried to foul to stop play before Clemson missed a 3-pointer and Lance Terry got the defensive rebound allowing Tech to call timeout.
After a lengthy delay, McCollum was helped to the locker room by two members of Tech’s training staff.
The Jackets forged ahead in what turned out to be an 89-86 win in triple overtime. McCollum watched the remainder of the game from the locker room.
“We’ll probably get another evaluation (Wednesday),” Tech coach Damon Stoudamire said. “He’s up and he’s moving around and everything is fine from that standpoint, but I’m not a doctor so I don’t really know where he’s at in terms of what he can and can’t do. Vitals is fine and that, for me, is the biggest thing. He’s walking and everything things to be good.”
Tech started the night with only eight scholarship players available. Guards Kowacie Reeves and Jaeden Mustaf and forward Luke O’Brien were not active because of injury and freshman Doryan Onwuchekwa has not been with the team since December because of personal reasons.
A 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior, McCollum came into Tuesday’s game second on the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game and second in assists with 64. The Oklahoma transfer has started 10 of the 18 games he has played in for the Jackets. He missed four games in late November and early December due to sustaining a concussion Nov. 23 against Cincinnati.
It’s unclear whether McCollum will be available when Tech travels to Virginia at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
