On Georgia Tech’s homecoming weekend, a most notable collection of alumni will be celebrated. The 1990 national-championship football team will be honored Saturday at halftime of the Yellow Jackets’ game against Virginia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

The team was to be recognized last fall for the 30th anniversary of the championship, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the plans. That Yellow Jackets team, coached by Bobby Ross, finished the season 11-0-1 and earned the No. 1 ranking in the final UPI (coaches) poll.

The 1990 football team is not the only team of note getting together this weekend for homecoming. The 1971 baseball team and the 2001-02 women’s swimming teams also will be enjoying reunions and will be honored at the football game.

The 1971 baseball team, coached by Jim Luck, was the second in school history to make the NCAA Tournament. The Jackets finished with a 31-6 record and 10th in the final poll and recorded a team ERA of 2.65, at that point a team record and still the second lowest in team history. Their .838 winning percentage remains the highest of any team in almost a century. No fewer than five team members have been inducted into the Tech sports Hall of Fame, including Cam Bonifay, who went on to become general manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1993-2001.

The 2001-02 women’s swimming team was the first in school history. Coached by Seth Baron and captained by Lisa Hancock, the Jackets laid a foundation for a team that has generated multiple All-Americans and All-ACC honorees. Among the team members was Jenny Lentz, who went on to become a U.S. Navy fighter pilot.
