Former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck announced via social media that he will transfer to Miami.
Beck will have one season of eligibility remaining. Beck originally declared for the 2025 NFL draft, but ultimately elected to enter the transfer portal after spending the previous five seasons at Georgia.
During his time with the Bulldogs, Beck threw 58 touchdown passes and led the Bulldogs to a 24-3 record in games he started. Beck’s numbers dipped in his second season as Georgia’s starter, as his completion percentage fell and he led the SEC in interceptions. The Georgia offense also led the country in dropped passes and had an offensive line hampered by injuries.
Beck also is recovering from an injury sustained in the SEC Championship game. He had surgery to repair the UCL ligament in the elbow of his throwing arm. Beck is expected to begin throwing in the spring.
“Carson’s injury was significant and needed to be repaired and fixed, and he did just that. That’s the best thing for his long-term future,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said before the Sugar Bowl. “And he met with some really good people who have focused on that injury before and made that decision based on his career and his future.”
Beck was with Georgia in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs lost 23-10, with Gunner Stockton starting in place of the injured Beck. Stockton threw for 234 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
This move from Beck is not unprecedented, as Miami quarterback Cam Ward did something similar last year. He initially declared for the NFL draft when he was at Washington State, only to then enter the transfer portal and end up with the Hurricanes. Ward threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns this season and now is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks and players taken in the draft in April.
Beck threw for 28 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 3,485 yards this season at Georgia. He served as a backup on two national championship teams and helped guide Georgia to the SEC championship this season.
“I think Carson should be remembered as a great player. I mean, he’s who got us to this point in our season,” Georgia offensive lineman Tate Ratledge said before the Notre Dame game. “So him getting hurt, I don’t think should have any effect on his legacy he’s left here. I mean, he’s brought us to two SEC championship (games). Some could say he won us one. But, I mean, he’s had a tremendous career here. And the guy who waited his turn, had the opportunity to go anywhere in the country and play, and decided to wait his turn here.”
In total, Georgia now has had 12 players exit the program via the transfer portal. The Bulldogs have brought in six players from the portal, including former Miami safety Jaden Harris.
Interestingly enough, Miami is set to open the 2025 season against Notre Dame on Aug. 30.
