Colorado State wide receiver Michael Gallaup, of Monroe, had a dazzling two-year career with the Rams after starting his career in junior college.
He was named a semifinalist for the Fred Biletnikoff award which goes to the nation’s top wide receiver and was a second-team All-American (Associated Press).
Here’s what the projected third-round pick (nfldraftscout.com) had to say to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the Senior Bowl:
Q: What has it been like for you at the Senior Bowl?
A: "It's been fun. It's been a little bit rough talking to the scouts and things like that. It's been fun out there (on the field). You have to figure out how you want talk to and how you want them to perceive you."
Q: How did you end up at Colorado State?
A: "I had to go the junior college route. I got hurt my sophomore year and nobody really wanted me after that. Then (Colorado State coach Mike) Bobo called me one night and asked me to come out on a visit. I committed to them on the spot."
Q: Had he been tracking you from his old Georgia days?
A: "Yes Sir."
Q: How did you end up in junior college?
A: "I didn't have the SAT scores."
Q: How did you bridge that gap?
A: "If you go JUCO, you have to know that you're there for ball and that you have to go to class. You have to take care of business. Nobody is going to tell you that in junior college. They'll have you for semester and you can play football, but if you don't get your grades they won't have you the next semester. They'll get somebody else. So, I had to make sure that I got that out of the way so that I could go play at a Division I school."
Q: Where did you go to JUCO at?
A: "I went to Butler Community College in Kansas."
Q: So the realty show "Last Chance U" about junior college football is real?
A: "It's a struggle for real. Junior College, a lot of them test how much you want to play football and if you really want it that bad. Junior college is tough for real. You better get it how live out there."
Q: How explosive of a receiver of you?
A: "I'm definitely pretty confident in my ability to play football. Football has always been one thing that I can go out there and do with ease. So, I am going to go out there and I'm going to have to show it to them."
