If you're heading to the Atlanta Falcons game Sunday, you'll want to give yourself extra time to make it to your seats.
The NFL has encouraged extra security at its games, and it will be in place at the Falcons' home opener vs. the Philadelphia Eagles at the Georgia Dome, the team said Friday.
So what are the additional safety measures? And do they involve pat-downs below the waist? You'll have to have a ticket to the game to find out.
“Our number one priority is the safety of the guests coming to the Georgia Dome," Jason Kirksey, spokesman for the Dome, told the AJC in an email Friday. "We do not discuss specific security measures for any event at the Georgia Dome, however we have enhanced our safety measures for all NFL games at the request of the NFL.”
The NFL suggested all fans be patted down from the ankles to the knees and from the waist up before the start of the season, USA Today reported Thursday.
The league says the extra security isn't the result of a specific threat. But a fan that toted a Taser into the Cowboys vs. Jets game last week probably didn't help.
“We encourage fans to arrive early and be patient about entering the stadium,” Falcons CEO and team president Rich McKay said in a statement. “The enhanced security procedures upon entry recommended by the NFL will further ensure the safety of fans, but will require some additional time for inspections at the gates. We hope fans will come early, enjoy our tailgating opportunities, and take advantage of the fan friendly amenities inside of the Georgia Dome.”
Parking lots will open at 3 p.m. Sunday and the gates at the Dome will open at 6 p.m. Game time is at 8:20 p.m.
