Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who suffered a high right ankle sprain in the 37-10 loss to the Rams on Sunday, did not practice Wednesday, according to the teams' official injury report.

Cornerback Desmond Trufant (turf toe), defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (abdomen) and running back Ito Smith (concussion protocol) did not practice.

Left guard James Carpenter (knee) was limited at practice.

Ryan has started 163 consecutive games, dating to the 2009 season.

“Matt is extremely resilient,” offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said. “I think it would be very premature to write him off for this week.”

Ryan is a gritty player and has played through injury before.

“When you think of toughness in football players, you tend to thing about positions other than quarterback,” Koetter said. “Matt is extremely tough. He’s taking a lot of hits, (which may not be noticed) if you’re just looking at the football and not watching what happens after the ball leaves his hands.

“That guy takes a lot of hits where he’s in a defenseless position. He does a really good job of taking care of his body year-round. He’s got a routine that he’s tweaked several times over the years to put his body in the best position to hold up for a 16-game schedule. I know that he’ll do everything in his power to try to get ready for this week. It starts with the right mindset, and I know that he has that.”

Matt Schaub will take over if Ryan can't play against Seattle.

“I think people tend to forget what kind of career Matt Schaub has had in this league,” Koetter said. “I remember when I was first in the NFL back in Jacksonville and Matt had it rolling in Houston. He’s still a very capable player.

“Even though the game was out-of-hand when he went in, I think he demonstrated what he’s capable of. Seeing him in practice every day, that’s why you keep a guy like Matt Schaub on your team in case you have a situation where your starter can’t play.”
