He called himself "Prime Time."
No event encapsulates Deion Sanders’ limitless abilities and unparalleled conviction like the 24 hours in October 1992, when Sanders sandwiched a pro football game between a pair of postseason baseball games in two different cities, located 1,000 miles apart.
“Deion’s Double Play,” an ESPN “30-for-30” documentary which premieres at 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, takes a close look at an unbelievably eventful few days for the former Atlanta Falcons receiver/cornerback/returner and Atlanta Braves outfielder.
Back in 1992, the Falcons faced the Miami Dolphins in a 1 p.m. game at the Orange Bowl. Sanders caught a 9-yard pass and returned two kicks and punt in a 21-17 loss. Sanders immediately flew to Pittsburgh, where the Braves faced the Pirates in Game 5 of the NLCS. Sanders did not see any action in the 7-1 loss. He went 0-2 in Braves’ 13-4 loss in Game 6 in Atlanta.
A week later, however, Sanders was in a similar position as the Falcons traveled to San Francisco and the Braves hosted the Blue Jays in Game 2 of the World Series. He did not attempt the cross-country trek. He stayed in Atlanta, starting in left field. The Braves lost that game 5-4.
He remains the only player to have appeared in a Super Bowl (1995, 96) and World Series (’92).
“Deion’s Double Play” is directed by Ken Rodgers (“The Two Bills,” “Four Falls of Buffalo”) and produced by NFL Films.
