ATHENS -- The teaching process continued for Georgia's youngest players Tuesday night.
Coach Mark Fox made sure freshmen Donte' Williams and Marcus Thornton and sophomore transfer Sherrard Brantley saw plenty of playing time in the Bulldogs' 70-55 victory over Charleston Southern at Stegeman Coliseum.
Williams and Thornton each scored five points -- career highs for both -- as Georgia (10-2) led by as many as 33 points in running its winning streak to seven games. It's the Bulldogs' longest win streak since the 2006-07 team won seven in a row early that season.
With only one game remaining before SEC play begins with a visit from Kentucky on Jan. 8, Fox needs his younger players prepared.
"Donte' Williams and Marcus Thornton both made really good plays," he said. "They both made baskets. They both had assists, and they both had rebounds. They needed time on the floor so they can make some things happen."
It was the second consecutive game that Fox has force-fed Williams and Thornton. They both played 18 minutes in an 85-38 victory over High Point last week and then came back with 17 and 16 minutes against Charleston Southern (6-7).
Thornton also had three rebounds, three blocks and an assist. Williams added three blocks, two rebounds and an assist. Brantley had two points and two assists in 20 minutes.
"It's really good to get some playing time and experience," Williams said. "I feel a lot better about myself now. It's important to practice hard and play hard so that I can start to fit in with the guys. I think I'm starting to understand everything a lot more now."
Georgia's youngsters benefited from the Bulldogs' huge lead as Travis Leslie (15 points, seven rebounds), Trey Thompkins (13 points) and Jeremy Price (10 points) helped Georgia take a 55-22 lead with 15:12 remaining in the game.
Fox also shuffled his lineups at times, moving Leslie to shooting guard for stretches, and worked on specific areas, such as running only certain plays and working on their defense when the team was on the other end of the court from Georgia's bench.
"Everybody had their little piece. We got better," Thompkins said. "It’s about that time [for SEC play], and [the younger players] understand that. League play is coming up, and they understand that we’re going to need them in these games coming up. The whole league is tough this year."
The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 this month and look to go undefeated in December for the third time in 30 years, joining the 1982-83 Final Four team and the 2002-03 team, both of which went 7-0 in December. They play host to Eastern Kentucky on Friday.
Charleston Southern had hoped to make a strong impression with four Georgians -- Kelvin Martin (Adel), Kenny Mitchell (Decatur), Jamarco Warren (Gainesville) and Sheldon Strickland (Lithonia) -- in the starting lineup.
Instead, Georgia dominated, rolling to a quick start and controlling play for its second blowout victory of the season, despite 24 points from Warren.
The Bulldogs led 24-13 midway through the first half, by 21 points at halftime and then removed any doubt with a 14-2 run to open the second half for a 55-22 lead with 15:12 to play in the game.
Georgia showed no residue from its sluggish performance against Mercer, running to a 41-20 halftime lead, behind 12 points from Leslie.
