The College Football Hall of Fame, scheduled to open its new home in downtown Atlanta in about three weeks, will put tickets on sale to the public Friday.

Priced from $16.99 to $19.99, the tickets will be available online at www.cfbhall.com.

The Hall of Fame attraction, awarded to Atlanta in 2009 and under construction since early last year, will open Aug. 23, the Saturday before the start of the college football season.

Grand-opening ceremonies on that day will include “a tailgate-type atmosphere” starting at 9 a.m. and featuring Hall of Famers, college drum lines, kids’ activities and giveaways, according to John Stephenson, the attraction’s CEO. Doors to the facility will open at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for ticket holders.

On-line purchasers will be asked to designate a date and time for their tickets. Walk-up tickets will be available at the box office on a limited basis.

“We will limit the number of folks in the building at any one time to ensure a comfortable visit,” Stephenson said.

The 94,000-square-foot attraction, located on Marietta Street across from Centennial Olympic Park, was built at a cost of $68 million, all privately funded except for $1 million from Invest Atlanta, the city’s economic development authority. Not included in the $68 million: $15 million that the state spent to build an adjacent parking deck and a connector from the front of the Hall of Fame building into the Georgia World Congress Center.

The largest of the Hall of Fame’s 15 corporate sponsors is Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A. The attraction’s full name is the College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience.

While the Hall of Fame portion honors the 1,155 former players and coaches who have been enshrined since 1951, the fan-experience portion is designed to celebrate the sights and sounds of the game, often through high-tech interactive exhibits.
