Wife of Arkansas State coach dies hours after he left team to be with her

Wendy Anderson, the wife of Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson, has died after a two-year fight with breast cancer. She was 49.

Blake Anderson says his wife died Monday night, just hours after the school announced he would be taking a leave of absence. He said on Twitter: “She passed as peacefully & gracefully as you could ever hope.”

Arkansas State has said assistant head coach and defensive coordinator David Duggan — a former position coach at North Carolina and Southern Miss — will serve as interim head coach.

Anderson has gone 39-25 record in five seasons at Arkansas State. The Red Wolves open the season Aug. 31 at home against SMU.

The Red Wolves travel to Athens to face Georgia on Sept. 14. The Bulldogs and Red Wolves last met in 2001, when Georgia won 45-17 in Athens. Their only other meeting came in 1997, a 38-7 home victory for the Bulldogs.
