Georgia Tech guard Jose Alvarado is considered questionable for the Yellow Jackets game against rival Georgia in Athens on Wednesday.
Alvarado, who has started 56 out of the 57 career games that he’s been available to play, missed Tech’s last game – against Elon last Monday – after injuring his ankle in practice.
He was to practice Monday for the first time since the injury.
“He’ll probably do a little stuff (Monday), but obviously, if he’s not able to go full throttle by (Tuesday), it’s going to be hard to play him on Wednesday because he’ll have missed a lot of time over a week and a half,” coach Josh Pastner said. “For his sake, we don’t want to do anything to jeopardize him for the long term.”
Alvarado led the Jackets in scoring, minutes, assists and steals last season and was second in rebounding. Against Elon, the Jackets won 64-41 but turned the ball over 17 times with their point guard on the bench.
“We’re a better team with Jose, but if he’s not there, guys have got to step up and get the job done,” Pastner said.
Pastner also addressed another matter raised following the win over Elon, the possible redshirting of sophomore forward Kristian Sjolund. Pastner said that the possibility remains under discussion, “but I think we’re leaning toward redshirting him.”
Sjolund played 21 games as a freshman last season, averaging 9.4 minutes. Pastner appears to be favoring Sjolund sitting out a season and continuing to develop.
“I think Kristian’s got a chance to be a really good player,” Pastner said. “He continues to improve and it’s just one of those things where it’s hard to play everybody.”
