Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson did not have an update on the status of B-back KirVonte Benson, who was helped off the field with an injury in the first quarter of Tech’s loss to South Florida on Saturday in Tampa, Fla.

“We’ll know something (Monday),” Johnson said on his weekly teleconference.

Benson gained 41 yards on five carries before leaving. On his final carry, Benson appeared to step awkwardly with his left foot and then took a direct shot to his left knee as he was tackled to the ground.

Benson gained 1,053 yards last season in his first season as a starter, earning All-ACC honors. Not having Benson, a running back who combines shiftiness with tackle-breaking power, for Tech’s ACC opener at Pittsburgh this Saturday or games going forward would be a decisive loss.

Benson was replaced Saturday by redshirt freshman Jordan Mason, who gained 95 yards on 13 carries.
